Chapter Twelve

First Ascent of Hunza Peak

Meanwhile Mick and Crags were exercising themselves on the Hasanabad Glacier. In Mick’s words, ‘I had assumed our proposed route would only require one rope and hardly any gear. Crags contributed by forgetting his helmet.’ Fortunately, some hospitable Swedes lent them rope, gear, helmet and dehydrated food. As a bonus they learnt that their benefactors had just climbed Bublimiting (5850m) and left all the necessary abseil points in place. Mick and Crags decided to climb the col at 5600 metres between Bublimiting and Hunza Peak and ‘take it from there’. Here is Mick’s account of what followed.
